Virginia Powell, longtime Cushing resident and former educator, passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at the age of 88 years. The daughter of the late Roland Ernest Holmes and Lillian Nash Holmes, Virginia was born on January 4, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York. Virginia lived in Gerritsen Beach, New York and graduated from Girls Commercial High School in 1945. She then attended North Texas State College in Denton Texas, graduating in 1950. While working at Jenkins Music Company in Tulsa, she met and married Paul Percel Powell, Jr. on July 4, 1951. She spent 14 years raising children, then went back to school at Oklahoma State University and graduated in 1968 with a Masters in Education. Virginia had taught in the Cushing schools for 23 years prior to her retirement in May 1991. She had taught 2 years as an art teacher at Cushing Middle School and 21 years as an elementary teacher at Harrison and Sunnyside. She was a member of the Cushing Genealogical Society, Retired Teachers Association, Kappa Kappa Iota Sorority, American Association of University Women, Red Hat Society and over ten years as a volunteer with the Cushing Hospital Auxiliary. Survivors include two daughters, Carrilee Testerman and husband, Ed, of Cushing and Ginny Mae Powell of Cushing; one son, Paul Powell, III and wife, Cheri, of Cushing; four grandchildren, Carrianne Testerman, Lindsey Schneider and husband, Matt, Paul Powell, IV and wife, Tiffany, and Dallas Lauderdale and husband, Jake; seven great-grandchildren, Kinsley Schneider, Katelynn Powell, Weston Schneider, Remington Powell, Peyton Lauderdale, Colt Powell, Seth Lauderdale and Bryleigh Lauderdale and many other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, Virginia was preceded in death by brother, Roland Holmes.
