Velma D. Tuttle Long, longtime Cushing resident, passed away Friday evening, November 1, 2019 in Drumright at the age of 92 years. She was born on July 8, 1927 in Oxford, Arkansas (Iszard County) to a devoted Christian family. She was the 12th child of "13" children of George Washington Tuttle and Rosa Elvira Gibson Tuttle of Cushing, Oklahoma. During the Depression of 1928, Uncle George Gibson, drove the Tuttle family from their ancestral farm to the Schlegel/Cushing area. Dena "Pal" was only a year old at this time. Five of the Tuttle siblings had previously passed away due to childhood illnesses. Most of the Tuttle family were Cushing High School Athletes. They all dearly loved Cushing and were very proud to call it home. At one time five of the brothers were the CHS Basketball Team. All 8 brothers and sisters were Cushingites through and through. Dena was educated in Cushing, Oklahoma, class of 1946, completing her education in Los Angeles, California. She lived in Torrance, California during WWII and worked for the telephone company as an operator. While in California, she obtained her beautician license and also worked at Mobil Refinery as an Operator She completed her education acquiring a nursing license. She wanted to be closer to her five brothers whom had safely returned from the War. She came home to Payne County and began her last business venture of real estate; purchasing, remodeling and selling homes She married Melvin Alphaeus Long in Yale, Oklahoma at the Annual Picnic on August 6, 1946. Dena was blessed with two daughters; Diana Sue Long Young and Deanie Long Moore. Dena was a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church in Cushing; serving as Sunday School Teacher and singing in a Women's Trio. She was active in the Cushing Garden Club. Dena was a very accomplished dancer and loved dancing the jitter bug. She loved Thursday night music and dancing at the Senior Citizen Center before her long and extended illness in her later years. Dena was survived by her daughters Diana Sue Long Young and husband Bill of Cushing, Oklahoma, daughter, Deanie Long Moore of Tulsa, Oklahoma and grandchildren; Deidra & Danny Okeefe and children; Darrian, Dolan, and Dylan of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Matthew Moore and Stephanie of Big Spring, Texas, Scott Moore of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Brooke O'Kelly, Cushing, Oklahoma, brother-in-law, Milferd Townsdin of Paris, Texas, nephews, Jon Tuttle, Cushing, Oklahoma, Mike and Jenny Tuttle Durant, Oklahoma, along with many more relatives, and friends. She was predeceased by husband Melvin A. Long in January, 1974, son-in –law, Brad A. Moore, in January, 2013, and grandson Brett James Young in February 2018. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Mary Ann Wilson, Noma Tuttle, Lola Tuttle, Faye Townsdin, Woodie Tuttle, Ray Tuttle, Burl Tuttle, Johnny Tuttle, Noah Tuttle, Glen Tuttle, Kenneth Tuttle and Don Tuttle. Velma Dean Tuttle Long was the last surviving sibling of The Tuttle Family Memorial contributions may be made to the Fairlawn Cemetery, P.O. Box 1501, Cushing, OK, 74023, in her memory. Services will be held Friday, November 29, 2019 at 2 P.M. in the Memorial Chapel of the Davis Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Wilhelm officiating. Burial will be held in Fairlawn Cemetery.
