Robert Carlton Abshier, longtime Cushing business owner, passed away early Saturday morning, September 10, 2016 at Hillcrest Hospital Cushing, at the age of 72 years. The son of the late Karl Marx Abshier and Myrtle Clara Mashore Abshier, Robert was born on June 2, 1944, in Mesquite, Texas. He was raised and educated in Chickasha, Oklahoma, graduating from Chickasha High School in 1962. He married Marsha Lee Earl on March 8, 1965, in Pocasset, Oklahoma, and to this union two daughters, Kelly and Karen, were born. Robert, better known as Bob, earned a Bachelor's degree in business from Central State College, Edmond, Oklahoma, in 1967. While in college, he worked in broadcasting in Oklahoma City. After college, he went to work for The Hartford Insurance Company, moving with his family to Connecticut. Later, he became an insurance agent in Houston, Texas. Ultimately, the family returned to Marsha's hometown, Cushing, Oklahoma. Bob was trained in watchmaking and jewelry repair in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, allowing Bob and Marsha to join her parents, Henry and Ethel Earl in their family business, Earl's Jewelers. In later years, Bob also worked for Marsden Brothers, organizing promotional sales in other jewelry stores. Bob lived a life committed to community service. He was active in the Jaycees, Lion's Club, the Gideon's Society and the Cushing Chamber of Commerce. He worked for many years as an election judge for Payne County Election Board and was a board member for the Cushing Housing Authority. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and took Sunday school attendance for many years. Bob was passionate about RV camping, fishing, photography, and his grandchildren and great-grandchild. He loved community life in Cushing, always stopping to chat and find out what was happening in someone else's life. He was widely respected as a man of integrity, generosity, and kindness. Bob is survived by daughter Kelly Abshier Allen (David Allen); daughter Karen Abshier (Lisa Pierce); four grandchildren: Elizabeth Allen, Erin Allen (Beslan Khadziev), Emily Allen and Evan Allen; one great-grandchild, Millana Khadzieva; brother Elmer Abshier (Irene Goodman Abshier); sister Karliene Abshier Spradlin (Pete Spradlin); sister-in-law Carol Earl Meade (Paul Meade); sister-in-law Kathryn Earl Calavan (Michael Calavan) and many beloved nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Marsha and his parents, Karl and Myrtle. A celebration of Bob's life is planned for Sunday, September 18, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. in the First Baptist Church, Cushing. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Lion's Club or the American Heart Association would be appreciated.
