Quincy Matthews Dawes, a Cushing resident for 68 years, passed away on January 29, 2017 at the age of 90 years. The daughter of the late Jesse Lee Matthews, and Ethel (Cabe) Matthews, Quincy was born on November 2, 1926 in Agra, Oklahoma. She attended Columbia Elementary School and graduated from Agra High School with the Class of 1945. After passing a State of Oklahoma test, she was issued a War Emergency Certificate during the summer of 1945, while a student at Central State College (UCO), Edmond. The War Emergency Certificate allowed her to teach at Soonerville Elementary School for one year. She taught Business Education at Norfolk High School for the next five years. Quincy continued her education attending classes on evenings and Saturdays, as well as attending summer school, until she received her Bachelor's Degree in the Summer of 1950. Quincy was a stay-at-home mom, for seven years, returning to her career when she started teaching Business Education Classes, at Cushing High School, in the Fall of 1958 (retiring in 1986). During this time she continued her education at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater. She received her Master's Degree in Education during the Summer of 1963. Quincy received the Outstanding Teachers Award in Secondary Education in 1976. She influenced generations of students during her 34 years of teaching. Quincy was united in marriage to Glen Dawes on August 17, 1947. To this union, one son, Michael (Mike) and one daughter, Patricia (Patti) were born. Both children graduated from Cushing High School. Glen preceded Quincy in death on July 14, 2003 after 55 years of marriage. She made a profession of faith when she was nine years old, and joined the Agra Baptist Church. In 1958, she and Glen became active members of the First Baptist Church of Cushing. She was an active leader, and worked in many positions. She was also active in the American Association of University Women, and Kappa, Kappa Iota for many years. She belonged to Oklahoma Retired Teachers, Payne County Retired Teachers and Cushing Retired Teachers. She enjoyed traveling, reading and most of all she enjoyed being with her family and friends. Quincy moved from Cushing in 2014 to Edmond and later to Marlow, to be close to her children. She is survived by one son, Mike Dawes and his wife, Lois, of Marlow, Oklahoma; one daughter, Patti Cummens and her husband, Malcolm of Edmond, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Adrian Dawes and his wife, Lindsey of Jackson, Missouri, Melissa Cummens of Edmond, and Matthew Cummens and his wife Kathleen of St. Louis, Missouri; two great-granddaughters, Ashlyn and Liley Dawes of Jackson, Missouri; two sisters, Erdis Dean and Ruth Boring both of Midwest City and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Aaron Dawes, and her parents. Also, one brother, Eugene Matthews, one sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 4, 2017 in the First Baptist Church, Cushing Oklahoma. Serving as pallbearers will be Adrian Dawes, Matthew Cummens, Dewayne Matthews, Jay Matthews, Jim Dean, David Boring and Jeff Boring. Honorary pallbearers will be Aaron Dawes, Dr. Lewis King and Jan Watkins. Burial will follow in the Fairlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Building Fund at the First Baptist Church, or the Church of your choice, in memory of Quincy.
