Lewis was born in Platte County Nebraska to Herman and Emilie on Friday, January 13, 1939. When he was 2 months old they moved to a farm near Belgrade in the Timber Creek area. In 1956 Lewis graduated from Belgrade High School. Lewis was 17 when he enlisted in the United States Army. He served 6 years and was honorable discharged in 1962. Lewis was proud to serve his country and was a Petty Elite Rank Specialist E4 as a US Army Security Agency with Crypto Analysis Clearance.

On August 17, 1963 Lewis and Sandra (Bourn) were united in marriage at Peace Lutheran Church in Timber Creek Nebraska. They were blessed with 5 children.

They moved to Millard Nebraska in spring 1966 and raised their family in the same home for over 50 years.

Lewis spent most his life in construction, owning Fittje construction with his wife Sandra. One look at his big calloused hands and you knew he was a hard worker. Lewis was known in Omaha as an innovator. He would frame a 2 story wall on the ground then used his Selleck (forklift) to lift into place wall by wall. He also started the trend by using a Farmall Tractor with a Farmhand loader as mobile scaffolding. This earned him the nickname as the "tractor guy" by local framing crews.

Lewis was also known for his "Fittje-fy" ingenuity. He would use that to engineer solutions to everyday problems and passed this MacGyver style trait to his children.

Lewis's love for his country continued thru his life by volunteering at the VFW Post 8334 and serving as the VFW Quartermaster from 1990-1997.

After Lewis retired he continued to honor the fallen by performing Military honors for over 1,000 Veterans, averaging 160 funerals each year.

He loved spending time with his family. Summers camping in Wyoming, hiking Laramie Peak, watching football games, attending his grandkids choir & play activities. He liked spending time in Cushing so much he decided to move there in 2017. He loved living in Cushing! He loved spending time with his grandkids and attending their sporting events.
