LaRue E. Bondurant, 99, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2020. She was born May 26, 1920 near Arlington, Ky to William M. and Loula LaRue Edrington. Experiencing the great depression as a child and the loss of her father she moved to Ohio and then to Kirksville, MO where she graduated from Kirksville High School and NE Missouri State Teachers College with a BS in Education. There she also met and married Dale P. Bondurant who was in medical school studying to be a D.O. Upon completion of his internship in Tulsa, World War II intervened and he was assigned as a stateside doctor. They chose Cushing from a list of towns needing a doctor and moved here in 1945. They had 3 children David, Larry and Janice. She divorced in the mid 50's and relied on her teaching degree to care for her family. LaRue taught at Cushing Junior High/Middle Schools from 1958 to 1985. She taught 7th grade English and 7th and 8th grade Speech and Drama. During that time she also had a marriage to Jeff Castleberry and she attained her M.S, degree at OSU. She was the sponsor of the student council for 24 years. She served a term as state president of Oklahoma Junior High School Student Council Sponsors. In those capacities she sponsored annual sock hops and directed numerous plays. It is estimated that she taught over 4800 students during her career in Cushing. Notable quote to students: "Strive to be the best you can be." She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Cushing for 75 years. She took on many teaching, worker and leadership roles within the church during that time. She was also active in various civic groups. She was a member of various Masonic organizations, member of various civic clubs and professional organizations. She actively participated in the political process working with the Democratic Party. She was inducted into the Oklahoma Democratic Party Hall of Fame for her years of work and support of the party and its candidates. LaRue was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and a brother, her daughter Janice Winn and her son Larry Bondurant. She is survived by her son David and wife Rex Ann Bondurant of Gladewater, TX, grandchildren and their families Jane and Jimmy Ray Parish and Beau and Haley of West Point, MS, Susan and Ray Watson and Reagan and Hanna of Flower Mound, TX, Joel Bondurant of San Francisco, CA, Doug Winn and Natasha of Cushing, OK and Hunter Massey, Cliff and Melissa Winn and James, Madelyn, and Leah of Mannford, OK, Clint and Shea Winn and Peyton, Bray, and Whitley of Mannford, OK, and a number of nieces and nephews. Family private services were held in the Euchee Valley Cemetery. Memorials can be sent to First Christian Church of Cushing or provide assistance to any Cushing school teacher.
